Mad to Live by Brown Randall Paperback Randall Brown 9781458346230 Books Reviews
I had never previously read any flash fiction, but when presented with the option to do a book review for my college blog I chose Mad to Live. It not only met my expectations and needs for a fascinating review, but it made me a new flash fiction fan. I loved it!
Each story in Randall's slim collection is striking, elegant and concise. A feast for the soul.
Each story has its own unique flavor and characters, but themes of childhood, parenthood, marriage and infidelity, self-image, and the formative ways in which fathers and mothers and uncles and others affect each other and the children in their families, these themes are ever present. Sometimes subtle and other times direct, I marveled at Brown's ability to connect with my emotions in such (very) short stories. I like the way he structured the collection as well, five or six stories separated into categories of "what is," "what for," "what not," and "what if." The stories in the final section, the "what if" section, were a new experience for me in flash fiction - stories in which the author interacts with his own characters, addresses his relationship with readers, acknowledges and expands upon his place in the world even as he tells a fictional tale - a daring experiment from Brown and one that he conducted brilliantly as I found myself entertained, surprised, in awe. I'm so happy PS Books re-released this previously sold out collection so that I could enjoy it.
From a pregnant woman craving insects to a boy fighting criminals, Randall Brown tackles characters with truth, humor and vigor. Here is a collection that deserves its award.
A treasure of short/shorts... flash fiction that is concise, poignant, tender; stories that roam through chapters entitled what is, what for, what not, what if. Randall Brown's fiction does what I want surprises me, and helps me feel compassion for all the characters who, in a page or two, I feel as though I know so well. His are not the well worn tales of recipe fiction. They are each unique, most often a little odd, yet capture aspects of humanity that feel true and are so often missed in writing. Each of these stories hits it, and hits me where I want to be hit. If you were to buy only two books of flash fiction I'd pick this one and Stefanie Freele's Feeding Strays.
I enjoyed this little gem very much. The craftsmanship is evident, and it's got that touch of bizarre originality that leaves you thinking about things just a bit differently than you did before.
